Did you know
over 10 million Americans became victims of identity theft in
2004. CBS News says identity theft has been the most common
complaint reported to the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) for four consecutive years. Experts say it can take
up to 500 hours and average $1500.00 or more to recover your credit
rating. Victims can lose employment opportunities, be refused
for loans or even get arrested for crimes they did not
commit.
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your
personal identification without your permission to commit
fraud and other crimes. It can occur if you have a
credit card, drivers license, Social Security Number or even surfing
the internet. People steal identity for phone service,
utilities, open credit accounts and mortgages.
Are you at risk? Ask
yourself:
1. Do I receive my mail from an
unlocked mailbox?
2. Does a local sanitation department
pick up my garbage?
3. When purchasing items, am I asked to
write my Social Security Number on my checks?
4. Do I receive several pre-approved
credit offers every month?
5. Do I carry my Social Security Card in
my wallet or purse?
If you answer yes to any of these, you can be a
victim of this ever-increasing crime.
FEDERAL
LAW
The Identity Theft Law and Assumption
Act, encated by Congress in October 1998 makes identity theft a
